GRACIE’S Café in Forrestfield is hosting a free Christmas day lunch open to all those in need this holiday season.
Café owner and chef Grace Maiolo said Christmas was a time for giving back to those in need but also for community and fellowship.
“This isn’t just for those who are homeless but also those who are home alone like the elderly, or people who have had marriage breakups or families doing it tough,” she said.
“On Christmas day people can be very lonely so we say, don’t be alone, come down, it’s going to be a great day.”
A published cookbook author, Ms Maiolo worked in the meat industry as a butcher at Foodworks Forrestfield for 37 years before taking a break and completing a short stint at Perth Airport.
She opened Gracie’s Café 15 months ago.
“I saw that this was an empty café, when I walked in I knew this had to be mine, it’s a beautiful venue,” she said.
She is also involved with the HillSide Church next door who are partnering up to put on the event.
“I’ve seen so much need in the community and so many people doing it tough, we feed the homeless here through the Church foodbank,” she said.
“We have about 80 families who come for packages every week and people battling coming down to get food hampers.”
The free community event on December 25 will be held from 11.30am to 4pm and includes lunch, presents and a visit from Santa Clause.
Volunteers and donations are welcome to help provide the lunch.
“Everyone is welcome, no questions asked, anybody who wants to come along there will be plenty of food for everyone,” Ms Maiolo said.
“It’s about getting everybody into the community spirit, that’s what we believe Christmas is about, giving.”
