FOR some years, the community of the City of Kalamunda have worked together to ensure that needy families within the city receive parcels of food and gifts in time for Christmas.
The Sharing a Hills Christmas committee starts preparing in the months prior to Christmas and this year the first planning meeting was held at the beginning of September.
Churches, schools, service clubs, local business people and individual members of the community donate food, gifts, vouchers and Christmas treats ready to be sorted, packed and delivered in the two weeks prior to Christmas.
Every member of the family receiving the hampers has an individual gift.
Families needing help are referred by churches, school chaplains and community based referral centres.
In addition to helping families, small gift bags are given to local nursing homes.
In 2016, volunteers delivered 342 food and gift hampers, 197 small gift bags to nursing home residents, 10 gift bags to patients in Kalamunda Hospital and one basket of goodies for the hospital staff.
In total, 1265 people were assisted.
