MORE than 20 volunteers with a passion for education are being sought to help tutor local children as part of The Smith Family’s after-school Learning Club program.
Volunteers are needed for clubs at Clayton View Primary School, Middle Swan Primary School, Woodbridge Primary School and Kiara College, which aim to support about 100 students this year – a number which will grow as more volunteers are recruited.
Smith Family general manager Lorna Woodley said Learning Clubs ran in communities across the country, and provided safe environments for disadvantaged students to carry out their homework and receive other learning support.
Mrs Woodley urged anyone interested in education to consider signing up to become a volunteer tutor.
“Volunteer tutors play a vital role in Learning Clubs by donating their time and expertise to support students with their homework, confidence and general literacy skills,” she said.
“For these clubs to run to their full potential, and support as many students as possible, we are asking members of the community to consider putting their hands up for one hour per week during school terms.
“It offers an invaluable service to local students, and the opportunity gives volunteers a great sense of satisfaction and connection to the community.
“It’s a relatively small time commitment, but we know it can make a big difference and everyone from university students to retirees is encouraged to consider becoming involved.
“Members of the public suited to volunteering in the role of Learning Club tutor are patient, enthusiastic and able to relate to students, in addition to being good listeners and communicators.
“Volunteers don’t need to have any background in teaching or be experts in curriculum areas, and we’ll provide them with training and support.”
Mrs Woodley said Curtin University also supported the Midland Learning Clubs through funding and volunteering opportunities. Volunteers will need to complete a selection process with The Smith Family before commencing. For more information visit www.thesmithfamily.com.au
