A LIFE in Australia brought many memorable years for Amelia and Alessandro Calabrese, bringing up four children and welcoming eight grandchildren and six great-grandchildren in the Swan Valley.
The Middle Swan couple married on April 24, 1948 in the small village of Bivongi, Reggio Calabria in the south of Italy, and recently celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary.
Post-war life was harsh and prospects bleak, so Alessandro emigrated to Australia in 1951, leaving behind Amelia and their 2-year-old daughter Maria to build a better life for his young family.
After two long years of separation and hard work, Alessandro welcomed his family, including his mother and father-in-law to their Millendon home.
Over the years, Amelia and Alessandro had three more children, Gina, Marcellina and Franco and moved to Middle Swan, where they live today.
Amelia, who recently turned 90, still cooks regularly for their extended family and despite health issues, 92-year-old Alessandro is still involved in Vino Italia, a Swan Valley vineyard and winery built in partnership with his brother-in-law, Eugenio Valenti in 1952.
Amelia and Alessandro’s milestone has been acknowledged with congratulatory letters from the Queen, the Governor General and the Prime Minister.
Family and friends joined them to celebrate with a lunch at Mulberry on Swan.
