RESIDENTS whose vehicles break down are urged to remove cars quickly to avoid vandalism and removal fees.
Local police and Shire of Mundaring community safety Rangers frequently deal with abandoned vehicles, including vehicles which can not safely be driven or have been left for a period of time.
Shire chief executive officer Jonathan Throssell said 50 cars were abandoned in 2014, a steady figure from the past few years.
He said it was unfortunate residents who ran into mechanical failure could then become victims of vandalism.
“Cars which are left abandoned on the side of the road are targets for people who may smash windows and set them alight, which is devastating for owners,” he said.
“Deliberately abandoned vehicles, which are often dumped by thieves, can suffer the same fate.
“We ask people to be mindful of the risk of leaving your car abandoned on local roads, as well as the potential safety hazard it can create for other road users.”
Along with a safety risk, abandoned cars attract a $205 fee and are towed to Welshpool.
“Unclaimed cars are then auctioned off, with the proceeds going a small way towards covering towing costs,” he said.
“Forty-five of the 50 cars abandoned in the shire in 2014 were auctioned off, with $4500 recovered.
“However, costs to the shire to tow these vehicles exceeded $7400 last year.
“Not only is this costing ratepayers, but other emergency services including police and fire brigades are consistently tied up with dealing with abandoned cars.”
