Award winning dress denotes ATAR stress

A DRESS inspired by the pressures of studying ATAR at high school has won a Mundaring Christian College student a top fashion award.

Makayla Parr, 18, decided to study a vocational course in applied fashion, design and technology part time at TAFE while studying hard for her year 12 exams.

The students were tasked with creating a garment, which for Makayla was an opportunity to explore the “stress, anxiety, hope and obsessive thoughts that come with high school”.

“The garment itself has been influenced by the final year ball,” she said.

“I upcycled heavy curtain fabric to depict paper and symbolise the pressure and expectations experienced especially in those final years.

“The dress is completely covered in school work and the flowers are made from past exams.”

Makayla was encouraged to enter the dress into the youth section of the Wearable Art Mandurah 2021 Showcase, that brings together a collection of handcrafted wearable art pieces from local, national and international designers.

Making it to the final round, Makayla got to see her dress worn by a model on a catwalk at David Grays Arena on November 6, before being announced as the final winner of her category.

“I didn’t know someone else was going to wear the dress when I got there, so to see them bring it to life was amazing,” she said of the experience.

“It was so special when she came out in it.

“I was shocked to win.”

Describing the opportunity as a “good escape from the stress of school”, Makayla is now focusing on her final exams and then a well earned break, after which she is now considering a career in the fashion industry.
