THE first sod was turned on the Kalamunda Central Mall project this week officially kicking off works to convert the area into a pedestrian focused streetscape.
Noongar Elder Neville Collard shared his rich ties to Kalamunda through a Welcome to Country and blessed the project before mayor Margaret Thomas addressed the community.
“It feels like this project has been a long time coming,” she said.
“We are looking forward to providing various opportunities for the community to come and watch the progress happening here.”
The project undertaken by civil engineering contractor Bos Civil encapsulates the City’s vision for Central Mall to become the heart of Kalamunda’s night-time economy.
It includes the addition of new trees and innovative lighting systems to create a space where evening events can be safely held.
“I would like to thank Bos Civil who will be ensuring works take into account the needs of our business community throughout the whole project,” Cr Thomas added.
The project is expected to be completed in July.
