Christmas carols back on in Darlington

By Rebecca Peppiatt

DARLINGTON Carols by Candlelight is back this Christmas Eve after a COVID-induced hiatus last year.

One of the Hills’ most popular festive community events was stopped from going ahead in 2020 after the pandemic restrictions made it impossible to run it safely, but this year organisers are pumped and ready to get back into the Christmas spirit.

“We’re holding it in front of the fire station on the oval this year so that everyone can social distance,” organiser Pauline Clark said.

“We don’t do orchestras and choirs.

“It’s just the kids that grew up here that can sing and anyone else who wants to join in.”

This is the 15th year the event has run and is a family favourite among locals who take down a picnic blanket and catch up with friends.

There’s free face painting for the kids, a raffle, Santa and elves running around and a coffee and orange juice stall.

“There are no solos and no performances,” Ms Clark said.

“All the kids are up here and then we get the mums and the dads to join in.

“I just tell the crowd, up you come.

“This is just a community thing.

“It’s not about me, it’s not about them, it’s not about showcasing any performance.”

The singing will start about 7pm but families usually arrive before then to get a spot.

Ms Clark is also responsible for the Swan View Carols by Candlelight but is unable to host the event this year.
