City doesn’t stop for COVID

IT was unusually quiet at the City of Swan’s council meeting last week with a number of councillors and key staff testing positive for COVID.

At the start of the meeting, mayor David Lucas told those in the gallery and watching via the live stream that many councillors and staff were appearing electronically due to COVID.

“This has significantly impacted City operations this week and resourcing available for tonight’s meeting,” he said.

Five councillors appeared via the video link and one was on a leave of absence, leaving nine of 15 elected members physically present.

Chief executive Jeremy Edwards was also absent due to COVID reasons with the executive planning and development manager and statutory planning manager also appearing electronically.

“Like many other local governments and organisations throughout Perth, the City of Swan has not been immune to COVID-19,” Cr Lucas told Echo News this week.

“While we have reduced the risk of spread within our workplaces by complying with State mandates, maintaining increased cleaning and hygiene protocols, RAT screening in our higher risk workplaces and implementing staff rotations, COVID-19 looms large in the community and some of our workforce have contracted the virus or have isolated as close contacts.”

Even with the easing of public health measures Cr Lucas said the City continued to maintain its cleaning and hygiene protocols, working from home rosters and provided masks and encouraged their use where social distancing was not possible.

“I would like to thank City staff, who have been cooperative, helpful and supportive of each other during these difficult times,” he said.

“I have been impressed with everyone’s level of flexibility and adaptability during the pandemic.

“I would also like to thank our community, who have been understanding and cooperative as we navigate these difficult times and do our best to serve our community.”
