Voting blunder leaves council dangling

THE City of Swan is still without a mayor or deputy mayor after tonight’s special council meeting to elect the positions was adjourned due to a mistake made during the election process.

Councillors had cast their votes to elect either councillor Charlie Zannino or Cr David Lucas as mayor with the votes falling six to Cr Zannino, seven to Cr Lucas and one vote invalid because it was left blank.

That left only 14 votes cast out of 15.

After some back and forth it was discovered Cr Mel Congerton forgot to cast his vote, with the ballot paper sitting on desk during the count.

City chief executive Jeremy Edwards ruled the vote be taken again with council then arguing for and against his decision.

It was then decided the decision be adjourned until tomorrow for further legal advice.

The meeting will resume Tuesday, October 19 at 6pm.
