Early lead leads to victory for Chidlow

By Brian Pallister

A WEEKEND of fine weather saw some big scores in Round 9 of Perth Hills footy.

Chidlow Cougars star players Jackson Ryan and Josh Edwards proved too much for the Mt Helena Lions in the ruck, giving the Cougars first use of the ball through Matt Mallaby and Steven Schorer.

Craig Duff belied his age as he was very elusive in the forward line.

Chidlow had opened up a 38 point lead by the first break.

The second was just as tough for Mt Helena as Chidlow continued to press, Kyle Campbell showed some deft footwork to elude a couple of tacklers and convert, while Jackson Ryan out bodied his opponents when resting in the forward line.

Justin Weaver battled against the odds and Dean James dropped back in support.

The Cougars extended their lead to 58 points by the main break.

The lions needed to regroup if they were going to salvage anything from the game.

Mitchell Maturo started to gain possessions around the ground while Rohan Murphy presented in the forward line to score a goal.

Michael McKinlay showed his typical run and carry from the back line bringing Luke Elliott and Jake Foreman into the game.

After an even third quarter with three goals each, the Cougars picked up their tempo again and slotted another six goals to three in the last quarter.

The Cougars demonstrated that they will have a big say in this year’s finals with the inclusion of several players missing through injury and work commitments.

Final score Chidlow defeated Mt Helena 146 to 65.

This weekend’s games start Saturday at 6.30pm, Mundaring vs Warwick Greenwood, Bullsbrook vs Gidgegannup, Pickering Brook vs Chidlow and Swan View vs Mt Helena.
