Fight against putting down Hachi

By Melissa Sheil

NOTE: On Echo News’ deadline on Thursday, Ms Loy was informed by the City of Swan Hachi would be released back to her.

Ms Loy says Hachi will be returning to the family in Melbourne.

A CAMPAIGN to save a 10-year-old dog from being euthanised is gaining traction, with a dedicated Facebook page reaching almost 500 members in three days.

The Save Hachi Bear page was set up last week to help Hachi the Akita, after he was surrendered to the City of Swan following an incident on August 23.

Melbourne resident Chrissy Loy had owned Hachi since he was a puppy but said she rehomed him following the birth of her children as they frightened him.

She sent him to a family in Perth, where it is alleged he bit the couple’s adult son within days of his arrival and was then surrendered.

“He is a very gentle boy and has never done anything like that before,” Ms Loy said.

City of Swan chief executive Jeremy Edwards said the City will not take any action until an investigation is completed.

“The City of Swan is currently holding the dog, which was surrendered by its legal owners on Saturday, August 23,” he said.

Creator of the Save Hachi Bear page Aga Kowalska said she will continue to fight for Hachi’s life and hopes he can be rehomed.

“We are all feeling very deflated but we haven’t given up yet,” she said.

The couple who surrendered the dog were contacted by Echo News  but declined to comment.
