Garrick celebrates 90th with new show

NOTHING stops Guildford’s Garrick Theatre, not time and certainly not a pandemic.

After 90 years, Perth’s longest continually running metropolitan community theatre is celebrating its birthday with a new thrilling show.

The not-for-profit is celebrating its big birthday with a production of Dracula, also celebrating its milestone 125th year this year.

Co-director and long-standing theatre member Rodney Stickells-Palmer said while COVID saw attendance capacity limited and a slight reduction in ticket sales, the show always went on.

“I think going to the theatre is a great relief for people during COVID because live performances are so rewarding for both the people watching and people performing,” he said.

Some theatre members have been involved for more than 50 years.

“I think it’s a real sense of achievement that we’ve built a community theatre that is so welcoming and that has seen its success for so long,” Palmer said.

“In a community where as an actor it’s easy to chase the show you want to do rather than stay at one theatre, it’s a very positive and rare thing that Garrick has achieved.”

Dracula, a Garrick Theatre teen production, is a hilarious adventurous production extended from Bram Stoker’s 1897 classic.

Directed by Rodney Stickells-Palmer and Gail Lusted with an original music score by Kieran Ridgway, Dracula incorporates a large cast including seasoned performers and the theatre’s youth team from TAG (Teens at Garrick).

“It’s been an absolute joy working with the large ensemble and talented team,” Lusted said.

“We’ve had our challenges earlier in the rehearsal schedule with COVID and flu, however everyone’s healthy again and it’s shaping up to be a very exciting season.”
