THE stakes could not have been higher for the U12 Championship boys who faced off against similar positioned South West Slammers during Round 9 WABL on Sunday.
Displaying some outstanding rebounding and fantastic defensive team work, Raiders pulled slightly ahead in the first half.
An arm wrestle of a game ensued with point for point being matched both ends of the court with Raiders still clawing onto a 1 point lead going into the last quarter.
Slammers came out strong and stretched their first lead of the game to 5 points and didn’t look to be slowing down until Raiders dug deep and regained a 1 point lead with less than a minute left on the clock.
A tremendous battle of wills and with everything on the line, the reaction from the boys and everyone watching on the final buzzer resembled a grand final win, as Raiders secured a phenomenal Win 42-40.
The U14 Division 2 Girls were chasing that elusive win heading into middle of the season.
They knew this round was going to be difficult as they faced ladder leaders South West Slammers. Raiders held a lead throughout, until the end of the third when Slammers mounted a strong come back pushing them 1 point in front.
Locked in a 36-36 scoreline during the final quarter it came down to a single free throw within the dying minute.
After a foul Heidi Lucassen stepped up to the line and scored her first free throw to give Raiders the lead.
The team secured their first, very well deserved, win 37-36.
