EXPECTATIONS were high with 12 Hills Raiders’ WABL teams playing at their home ground on Sunday.
The Under 12s were the highlight of the day securing some phenomenal and surprising wins.
Ladder leaders and undefeated Perth Redbacks could have been forgiven for thinking they would come away with another win, however, the U12 Division 4 girls had other ideas.
Starting strong, the Redbacks looked to take command of the game finishing the first quarter 11-4 and not backing down.
Digging deep with some brilliant team defence, Raiders gained a one point lead heading into half time.
The next quarter was heavily contested with both teams not giving an inch and matching each other at both ends of the court.
Raiders forged ahead increasing their margin slightly to three points heading into the final quarter.
A point for point game ensued with the final buzzer sounding and Raiders handing Redbacks their first defeat of the season in front of their extremely proud families and WABL community, cementing a fourth place ladder position.
Last time U12 Championship boys met Perth Redbacks they travelled to Morley and secured a well fought win but weren’t going to take anything for granted when facing their neighbours for a rematch despite being on their home ground in Mundaring.
Redbacks came out swinging and dominated the first quarter rattling the Hills boys who had not been on court together since prior to lockdown.
Strong teamwork in defence in the second quarter and some commanding drives saw Raiders fight back and take a marginal lead going into half time.
Two points down and moving into the last quarter, Raiders boys knew they had to step up and become the most determined team on the court if they had any chance of coming away victors.
Almost as if the switch flicked, the boys huddled together before walking back on court for the final eight minutes and they were back to their unwavering, fiercely determined selves and did not look back.
An unbreakable lockdown mid court defence agitated the opposition and saw the Raiders secure their third win in a row in front of huge support from their home crowd.
