Sizzling up support for mates

L – R Shanna of Midland, Nic Naitanui and Terrilee of Bunbury enjoyed mixing with shoppers during a fundraising sausage sizzle.
GENEROUS shoppers in Bassendean have pitched in to help two indigenous hospitality students who have been invited by the Jamie Oliver Better Food Foundation (JOBFF) to attend an event at Australia House in London next week.
West Coast Eagles star Nic Naitanui signed autographs for a gold coin donation at a fundraising sausage sizzle event, which was set up at Bassendean Shopping Village last week.
The sizzling event pulled in $2500 to help the two Governor Stirling Senior High School students get to London.
Shanna and Terrilee met the Australian Ambassador of the JOBFF, Danny McCubbin, after travelling to Pemberton in April to attend an eco tourism conference.
They cooked alongside chefs from Oliver’s Fifteen Restaurant group, which empowers disengaged youngsters by training them for careers in the restaurant.
While in London, the girls will also attend the UN International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking at Australia House.
The day against drug abuse raises awareness of the major problem illicit drugs represent to society and is supported by individuals, communities and various organisations around the world.
The students hope to raise enough funds to travel to London with their teacher and chef, Catherine MacDougall.
Ms MacDougall is heavily involved in Sharna and Terrilee’s lives as their mentor and she is very passionate about using food to ‘heal’ and ‘rehabilitate’ troubled teens.
