Spread the love for youth

AS well as cramming for her end of year ATAR exams, Year 11 student Lisa Pudhota has been hard at work planning a youth homelessness awareness event in Ellenbrook.

The For the Love of Youth community fun day at Ellenbrook Library on November 20 aims to raise awareness and funds for youth homelessness.

Lisa, 17, said the project was inspired by her involvement in a young women’s entrepreneurship program and a chance encounter with a stranger in her home suburb.

“One day at Ellenbrook shops, I had just got my P plates and I was sitting in my car when a guy knocked on my window, he looked really young, not even 16 or 17, and he said could I please have a dollar,” she said.

“I was on my own, and I felt scared, and then I was upset that I felt scared because for all I knew he just wanted to catch a train or a bus somewhere and needed a dollar.

“It was a moment of seeing him as a real person versus the stigma.”

To get the event off the ground Lisa got in contact with the City of Swan, Ellenbrook Collective and Chamber of Commerce for support.

As well as a number of stalls there will be raffles, face painting and henna and live entertainment.

“The purpose of the event is to create awareness and raise donations,” she said.

“At the end of the day I can only make so much money, but if something in someone’s heart changes because of the event that in itself will make a good difference to the community.

“I don’t think it’s set in what I’m trying to achieve yet until everything comes together and I see all the stallholders and I see everything come to life.”

All money raised will be used to create care packages for youth in need and distributed to organisations that support youth homelessness.
