Toy Library prepares for play day

By Sally McGlew

A DAY to play and make a mess with puzzles, playdough and lots of other children is the focus for World Play Day in Mundaring this weekend.

Mundaring Toy Library will be celebrating World Play Day with an Open Day for children eight years and under.

World Play Day turns 50 this year after the first play library was opened in Melbourne in 1971.

Joining toy libraries honouring the day across Australia, the Mundaring Toy Library will offer a world of fun for children, while the day is being formally recognised internationally on May 28.

When the original toy library opened for children with disabilities in Melbourne, it offered shared toys which could be booked out and returned.

The idea quickly spread and Toy Libraries began to pop up all over Australia, then the world. Located on the corner of Mundaring Weir Road and Craig Street, the Mundaring Toy Library’s Open Day will allow unstructured play for children on Saturday May 29, from 10am to 12am.
