U16s Raiders beat undefeated Eastern Suns

The Hills Raiders U16 Girls Division 2 team is currently sixth on the ladder of twelve after eight rounds of the season.

The team had a fantastic win to beat the then-undefeated Kalamunda Eastern Suns by two points in Round 7, but fell to the South West Slammers by three points in Round 8.

Against the Suns at Mundaring Arena, the Raiders got off to a quick start with a 10-point lead in the first quarter.

The game was close the rest of the way, with the girls fending off numerous late challenges by the visitors.

Madison Dymnicki led all scorers with 24 points, and was supported by Laila Jenkins with nine points, while Emily Thomas-Loehn and Kirsten Wray contributed eight points each.

In Round 9 the team travelled to Eaton to take on the Slammers.

The game was an arm wrestle the whole way, with defensive pressure holding both teams below their usual scoring margins.

While the Raiders stayed close throughout the contest and gave themselves every opportunity to win, poor free-throw shooting down the stretch meant they fell short, losing by three points. Thomas-Loehn led all scorers with 15 points.

“Although it would have been fantastic to follow-up the win at home over the only remaining undefeated team in the league with a win on the road against another top-four team in Round 8, I’m really proud of the players and pleased with where we are at, coming up to the mid-point of the season” coach Lenora Sundstrom said.

“The girls are getting better every week.

“There were stretches in both games where the opposition had to run offence for 40 or 50 seconds because they couldn’t find a way to score against our defense.

“Our transition offence is very difficult to stop.

“As our half-court offence continues to improve and our boxing-out becomes more consistent, we will be a very tough team to beat in the second half of the season.”

The Raiders travel to Bendat Basketball Centre to take on Perry Lakes Hawks in Round 9.
