U16s team so far undefeated

IT was a Mother’s Day to remember for Hills Raiders’ mums last weekend when the basketball season continued with no less than nine wins out of a possible 14 at Mundaring Arena.

There were a number of close games, including the U14-5Green team which secured a one-point win in overtime with only four players.

Currently moving through the season undefeated is the U16-2B team.

“Hills Raiders 1 U16-M Div 2 prevailed again, just, defeating Rockingham Flames 2 79 – 75 in a come from behind battle,” coach Tracey Warwick said.

“We started with a three point make and followed with some strong defense, rebounds and transition play to give us an early lead.

“Then the visitors clamped down on the transition and disrupted our offense flow clawing back to roughly even at quarter time.”

The second quarter saw the offensive wheels fall off allowing the Flames to transfer their defensive success into offensive confidence, knocking down a number of three pointers to finish the quarter 12 points up on the U16-2Bs at the half time siren.

“The half time talk was a plea to play our offensive game with particular emphasis on full court ball pressure in D setting a target to get within six at three quarter time,” Tracey said.

“Led by Zavier Pickersgill’s  strength on the boards and the tenacity of Milan Monro, that filtered through to the rest of the team, we headed into the final quarter five points down.”

By the final quarter, the team was four points down when Ryan Tafira hit the court, lifted the intensity to the next level and brought the team home to a thrilling four-point win.

“We got the points but more importantly learned that we cannot drop our game against any team in this competition,” Tracey said.

Next week the team will competing against Willetton.
