Wonks for the win

ONE special staff member at Northam Senior High School has been recognised for his efforts bridging the gap between cultures and communities, having been nominated as a contender in the coveted WA Education Awards 2021.

William “Wonks” Dick was announced as one of four finalists in the WA Aboriginal and Islander Education Officer category this week, an award acknowledging outstanding work in developing culturally inclusive teaching programs and facilitating relationships between students and indigenous communities.

“My work involves being a bridge between school and the community to support the positive partnerships between all stakeholders at Northam Senior High School,” Mr Dick said.

“But the most rewarding part is making a difference with students’ education and their life in general.

“I’ve been here since 2012, and though I thought it would be a part time gig, I’m still here and loving my job.

“It’s good to get recognition and be acknowledged for the work you do, though I’m not used to the spotlight.”

Northam Senior High School principal Marisa Del Pin said she congratulates Mr Dick.

“The winners will be announced in term 4, but we all know, regardless of the outcome, that Wonks is a winner,” she said.

The winners of each of the categories will be announced at Optus stadium later this year.

The winner of the WA Aboriginal and Islander Education Officer award will receive $25,000 (50 per cent for professional development and 50 per cent cash) with $2500 to the three runners up.
