THE Swan family and domestic violence network will host its 12th annual Midland March That Matters on Friday, December 5 at Midland’s Juniper Gardens as part of the 16 Days in WA campaign.

This year’s event introduces a new format designed to bring the community together for free food, activities and vital information to support the community to make a stand to end family and domestic violence.

This event also coincides with the beginning of a new chapter for the Swan Domestic Violence Network who is welcoming Midlas chief executive officer Angie Perkins as their new chair.

Ms Perkins has over 20 years of experience in the sector and a strong focus on stakeholder and community engagement, mental health, family and domestic violence and access to justice.

“Family and domestic violence in our community is everyone’s issue,” Ms Perkins said.

“We all have a role to play to ensuring everyone lives free from violence and fear.

“This year’s event is about giving people a space to connect, access resources, and hear about community led solutions.

“Real change happens when communities come together, listening, learning and working together.”

Ms Perkins said organisers want people to leave feeling a sense of hope, being equipped with the confidence, connections and tools to speak out against abuse and support those who need help.

“The march remains the heart of this event, a powerful symbol of unity, led by the WA Police Pipe Band,” she said.

The event will begin at 10am with welcome speeches at Juniper Gardens behind Midland Dome, accessible via The Crescent or Cale Street, followed by the march at 10.45am.

From 11am to 1pm, attendees can enjoy free food including a sausage sizzle provided by IGA Midland and Swan Rotary Club, browse interactive stalls hosted by local organisations offering resources on domestic violence prevention and support services, and participate in family-friendly activities.

What began in 2012 as a small awareness stall at Midland Gate has grown into the Midland March that Matters, one of the state’s most significant events advocating for safety and respect in relationships.

Hundreds of participants now gather annually to show solidarity with victim-survivors and those whose work is dedicated to preventing abuse.

The Swan Family and Domestic Violence Network is a collaboration of Midland-based organisations including Midlas, City of Swan, Relationships Australia WA, Indigo Junction, St John of God Midland, ERICA, Department of Communities, Best Lives, Ngala, Zonta House Refuge Association, Centrecare and many others.
