LAST Saturday’s Swan Chinese New Year festival and community market was a great success, bringing together more than 1300 people of many races and cultures.

The free event at Weeip Park in Midland was organised by Chinese Dance Australia in collaboration with the City of Swan, Swan Rotary Club and Chaos Theory Events.

The Midland area has always been proudly diverse and multicultural with more than a third of people born overseas.

Activities included Chinese dancing, music and stage performances to celebrate the Year of the Horse, and cultural performances including lion dances.

There was also Chinese lantern-making with free family activities including face painting as well as food trucks and market stalls.

City of Swan Mayor Tanya Richardson congratulated the organisers for their dedication and hard work.

“One of the privileges of being mayor of the City of Swan is the opportunity to experience all the wonderful cultural connections our community enjoys,” Ms Richardson said.

She said the community event celebrated Chinese culture while creating meaningful opportunities for local community connection, bringing together residents from Midland and surrounding areas.

“It’s a wonderful opportunity to celebrate both our Chinese community and the broader Swan community,” Ms Richardson said.

“Events like today are incredibly important to ensure our communities are represented and acknowledged.

“Today’s celebration also highlights the role of young people in strengthening community resilience and cultural continuity.”
