SCHOOLS, libraries and community groups across the Perth Hills and Swan Valley will take part in Harmony Week celebrations from March 16 to 22.

Harmony Week celebrates Australia’s cultural diversity while promoting inclusion, respect and a sense of belonging.

The week includes Harmony Day on March 21, when people are encouraged to wear orange to show support for cultural diversity and social harmony.

Local schools across the Perth Hills are expected to mark the week with activities including cultural food days, classroom discussions and storytelling.

Libraries and community centres across the region will also host displays and activities recognising the many cultures that make up the local community.

The City of Kalamunda will mark Harmony Week with a series of workshops aimed at supporting culturally and linguistically diverse residents.

Sessions will cover topics including family law, mediation and tenant rights, with the aim of helping residents better understand local services and support networks.

The City of Swan will also celebrate the week with a harmony family day at Ellenbrook community library on Saturday March 28.

The event will feature activities including henna art workshops, world music and children’s craft activities designed to highlight different cultures.

Harmony Week is celebrated nationally each year and encourages communities to learn about different cultures and traditions.

According to the federal government, more than half of Australians were either born overseas or have at least one parent born overseas.

Organisers say the week provides an opportunity for communities to reflect on the importance of respect and understanding.

Harmony Week also coincides with the United Nations International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination on March 21.

Celebrations aim to bring people together and recognise the cultural diversity that forms part of everyday life in Australian communities.
