COMMUNITY groups and councils in the Perth Hills are being encouraged to apply for new greening grants of up to $100,000 aimed at increasing tree canopy and reducing urban heat.

The state government has opened applications for the Let’s Grow grants program, which supports projects such as tree planting in streets, parks, school grounds and other urban spaces.

Planning Minister John Carey said the funding would help improve liveability across Perth and Peel.

“Our $10 million urban greening commitment provides direct support to projects that will boost tree canopy across Perth and Peel,” he said.

Grants ranging from $500 to $100,000 are available for small and large projects, with schools, community groups and local governments eligible to apply.

The program focuses on increasing shade and vegetation in built-up areas, with the aim of cooling suburbs and improving local environments, particularly in areas with limited existing canopy.

Education Minister Sabine Winton said greening projects could also benefit young people.

“Actively greening our schools will give young people a strong connection to nature,” she said.

The program is open to groups across the Perth Hills, with councils and community organisations encouraged to consider how the funding could be used to expand canopy in their areas, including planting along streets, in public reserves and around community facilities.

Increasing tree canopy has been identified as a key way to reduce heat in urban areas, improve air quality and enhance the liveability of local communities.

The grants form part of a broader push to increase urban tree cover across Perth and Peel, with projects expected to deliver long-term environmental and community benefits.

Applications can be made online through the state government’s Let’s Grow grants program website, with details available on the WA government website.
