THE Shire of Chittering has appointed a new shire president following the resignation of former president Mark Campbell earlier this year.
Councillor David Dewar was elected to the role at the March 18 ordinary council meeting, stepping up after serving as deputy president and acting president during the transition.
Cr Dewar takes on the position after a period of change within council, following the October 2025 local government elections and the recent leadership vacancy.
The appointment formalises a transition that had already been underway.
Cr Dewar had been acting in the role while council prepared to elect a new president, maintaining continuity in decision-making and representation.
He now assumes the position for the remainder of the council term.
The leadership change comes as the shire continues to manage growth and planning across the region, balancing development with its rural character.
Council has in recent months progressed a range of planning and community initiatives, with a focus on long-term strategy and local engagement.
Councillor Mary Angus was elected deputy president at the same meeting.
Cr Angus and councillor Beck Foulkes-Taylor both submitted nominations for the position of the deputy president.
A ballot was then conducted resulting in a 4-3 vote in favour Cr Angus.
In a statement, Shire of Chittering chief executive officer Melinda Prinsloo thanked Mr Campbell for his service to the community over the past five years and said the shire would remain committed to strong governance and continuity of leadership.
