CITY of Kalamunda residents will have the opportunity to weigh in on the proposed lease of Jorgensen Park at a special electors meeting later this month.

The meeting will be held on Thursday, April 16 at 6.30pm and will focus on the city’s proposal to lease part of the park for a commercial event.

The meeting follows questions raised by residents during public question time at the March 24 council meeting, where community members sought further information about the proposal, including the nature of the event and its potential impact on the park.

As previously reported in Kalamunda community opposes public park event, the proposal involves a portion of the Class A reserve being used for a ticketed event, with concerns raised about potential impacts on local wildlife and the surrounding area.

The proposal is under negotiation with event proponent Kzemos Australia.

In response the city has advised the lease agreement and any future event approvals would be considered through separate processes.

Electors meetings provide a formal opportunity for residents to ask questions, raise concerns and put forward motions for council to consider.

While motions carried at an electors meeting are not binding, they must be formally considered by council.

The proposed lease of Jorgensen Park has attracted ongoing community interest, with residents raising concerns about environmental, operational and community impacts.

Electors meetings are held under the local government act and allow residents to put forward motions for council to consider, as well as ask questions about local issues, as in a council meeting’s public question time.

Any motions carried at the meeting are not binding but must be formally considered by council at a subsequent meeting.

Further details about the electors meeting are available on the City of Kalamunda website.
