CHIDLOW Post House has launched a community support register in a bid to bring more Australia Post services to Chidlow.

Currently, residents are unable to renew or apply for a passport, complete working with children checks, have passport and driver’s licence photos taken, or verify their identity locally.

The closest post office that provides these services is in Mundaring, but it is only open during weekdays.

Chidlow Post House owner Tamara Stook said residents around the area need these services.

“Every day somebody comes in or rings up asking if we can do their passport or driver’s license photos or working with children’s checks,” she said.

“We tell them we can give them the forms but that they will have to go somewhere else to process them.”

The support register attracted around 250 signatures in its first three days.

“We’ve had a huge response – we’ve had people coming in especially just to sign it,” Ms Stook said.

Ms Stook said the addition of these services would help many residents.

“We do have an older population and they don’t always drive and public transport services aren’t great up this way,” she said.

“If you work nine to five then your only option on a Saturday is Midland because Mundaring doesn’t open Saturday mornings, whereas we do.

“That also extends east as well, as Northam’s post office doesn’t open on a Saturday, so if you live near Northam you’d have to go all the way to Midland on a Saturday, so having us in the middle would help a lot of people.”

She hopes the register will lead to action.

“We’re waiting until we’ve gathered a few more signatures before submitting a formal request to find out what we need to do to offer those services,” Ms Stook said.

“Hopefully, seeing that we have the support of the community will help with the application to bring those services to Chidlow.”
