THE stories of White’s Mill, Lion Mill and Mount Helena have been woven into the fabric of the Perth Hills for more than 140 years, and now the community is being invited to help preserve that history for future generations.

Lost Mundaring and Surroundings Local History Museum curator Owen Briffa is researching and writing a comprehensive history of Mount Helena and its predecessor communities, White’s Mill and Lion Mill.

The book will aim to build on his 2023 publication Over a Century of Education: The Built and Social History of Mount Helena’s Schools documenting the people, places and events that have shaped the district over more than a century.

Mr Briffa said the project was about recording not only the past but also the history being made today.

“The recent opening of the new Elsie Austin Reserve changerooms is a perfect example of how today’s events become tomorrow’s history,” he said.

“It is important that we capture the stories, achievements and memories of our community while they can still be shared.”

Community members are encouraged to contribute photographs, documents, memorabilia and personal recollections relating to Mount Helena, Lion Mill and White’s Mill.

Material is being sought on local businesses, schools, churches, the timber industry, the railway, the tavern, sporting clubs, community organisations, fire brigades, family histories and significant local events.

“No contribution is too small,” Mr Briffa said.

“Every photograph, document and memory helps tell the story of the community and ensures it is preserved for future generations.”

All contributors will be acknowledged in the published book unless they prefer to remain anonymous.

Original photographs and documents can be scanned and returned to their owners.
