A FIVE-PART storytelling series celebrating connection, culture and place is underway across the City of Swan, with four events still to come.

Presented by Tales of Togetherness, the program began at Old Young’s Distillery in Henley Brook on August 15 with tales inspired by fire.

Upcoming gatherings will explore air at Dayton Hub on September 13, space at Midland Junction Arts Centre on October 25, earth at the Old Courthouse in Midland on November 15 and water at Aveley Park on December 6.

Tales of Togetherness spokesperson Sally Riddell said oral storytelling has brought people together for thousands of years, passing on knowledge, preserving memories and helping communities understand the human experience.

“Stories reveal the light and dark of human experience,” she said.

“They play with the logical and mysterious, the past, the present and the future.”

Each event features three professional or emerging storytellers sharing traditional tales collected from cultures around the world.

The performers are introduced, their stories are then shared with a short question-and-answer session following each story.

Ms Riddell said while traditional tales were often shared with children the program was intended for adults and described the stories as rich, feisty, deep and exploratory.

“We chose the five elements because we wanted five events at five different venues and we wanted something that could be connected with this gorgeous place in which we live,” she said.

“We are on old and sacred earth, beside a river that has been the life force of this fertile region, the air is clear and the sky is enormous.

“This is a place that has spaciousness within the landscape and beyond (and) fire is a force of both regeneration and of destruction.”

The series follows a similar Tales of Togetherness program held in South Perth the previous year.

Its success encouraged Swan storytellers Ms Riddell, Saskia Scott and Gillian Clarke to develop a program for the area.

The City of Swan provided grant funding with Midland Junction Arts Centre and Old Young’s Distillery also supporting the project.

“We hope this event, these tellings, will inspire others to tell their own tales, to learn to become storytellers themselves, and to explore the world of traditional stories and storytelling,” Ms Riddell said.
