GUILDFORD-based Liberal MLC Anthony Spagnolo has congratulated the Malvern Springs Primary School community following the successful completion of its 100-km Runraiser for Cool Classrooms.
He has also called on the Cook Labor government to deliver a permanent solution to the school’s air-conditioning problems.
Year 2 teacher Keyan Robertson recently completed the 100-km challenge to raise funds towards improving cooling at the Ellenbrook school.
Mr Spagnolo said Mr Robertson and the entire school community deserved enormous credit.
“What Keyan has done for his students is extraordinary. Running 100 km in a day takes incredible commitment, and the way the Malvern Springs community has rallied behind him has been fantastic,” Mr Spagnolo said.
“The school community identified a problem, came together and did something about it. They deserve our congratulations and support.”
The fundraiser followed years of reported problems with ageing air-conditioning at the school, including faulty units, mould and classrooms reaching temperatures of up to 39 degrees.
Mr Spagnolo said the Education Minister’s response to those concerns had been disappointing.
“Labor has governed Western Australia since 2017. Parents do not care which political party installed an air-conditioner 13 years ago. They care that their children are sitting in classrooms that are too hot and they want the problem fixed.
“This school has been raising concerns for years. The Minister should be telling families what she is going to do about it, not searching for somebody else to blame.”
