SWAN United’s junior program has finished the season with the U14 girls crowned grand final champions following a 2–1 victory over UWA.
The match capped a significant weekend for the club, which had three junior teams reach grand finals, with the U16 boys narrowly losing 2–1 to Northern City and the U18 boys going down to Wembley on penalties.
The U16 team showed plenty of fight after falling 2–0 behind, pulling a goal back and then pushing hard for an equaliser in the final 10 minutes.
Despite the late pressure, Northern City held on for a narrow 2–1 win.
The U18 team took the lead against Wembley and continued to push for a second, before conceding an equaliser with around 25 minutes remaining.
With the sides unable to be separated, the grand final was eventually decided by penalties.
U18 boys coach Matt Coles said the result was difficult to take, but he was proud of the way his side approached the game.
“We took the lead and kept pushing for a second because we wanted to win the game, not just protect what we had,” he said.
“Wembley got themselves back into it with about 25 minutes to go and from there it became a real battle.
“To lose a grand final on penalties is tough, but I couldn’t have asked much more from the boys.
“They gave everything they had and should be proud of the season they’ve put together.”
Swan United club president Ben Kelly said the results only told part of the story.
“Teams win and lose grand finals, that’s football,” he said.
“But we are extremely proud of all our teams and how far they have come this year.
“The way they have represented Swan United, our families and our wider community is something that is difficult to put into words.
“As we stand here at the end of our season, I do so as an incredibly proud president, a proud member of Swan United and a proud member of our community.”
