PERTH-based independent filmmakers The Afterlife Party are set to premiere their homegrown paranormal documentary, ‘Curtain Call for the Dead: Guildford’s Garrick Theatre’ on October 31 at The Backlot Perth.
The independent production focuses on the historic Guildford venue Garrick Theatre celebrating its place in local history alongside the town’s surrounding landmarks.
The group previously won Best WA Made Horror Feature at the Perth Horror Film Festival for a project filmed in the Gnangara Pine Plantation.
During their time at the site, the team explored the rich history of the heritage venue and recorded experiences that matched longstanding accounts from theatre members.
Investigator and filmmaker Chantelle ‘Kat’ Kerr spent much of her life growing up around Midland and Guildford and spoke about the deep local significance of the landmark.
“Guildford has always been such an intriguing area because it holds so much history,” she said.
“You walk down that street in Guildford and it’s like you just kind of get transported back in time.”
Director and editor Jaysinn Allen said showcasing the historic venue and supporting the local community group behind it was central to the project.
“Honestly, it’s one of our team’s favourite places of all the places we’ve been,” Ms Kerr said.
“It’s beautifully unique, and we love to bring that attention to a local theatre.
“We really hope that people learn about the history and get to know that these aren’t just old buildings, but places that played a big part in the inception of Western Australia,” she said.
The filmakers hope the project encourages residents to reconnect with their own backyard and hold on to the region’s foundational heritage.
Attendees can meet the team at the screening event at 21 Simpson Street, West Perth on October 31, at 6pm.
