THE Northam visitor centre building received a vibrant makeover during the October school holidays.
Northam residents worked on the Season Splash Community Paint Project across four days transforming the pillars beneath the visitor centre building into a large public artwork.
About 15 young Northam residents participated in the four-day project which attracted considerable interest from community members enjoying the spring weather and spending time along the river foreshore.
Participants remained engaged throughout the program and had the opportunity to work alongside emerging Indigenous artist and Northam youth worker Duana Nickels, who shared her skills and experience with the group.
Ms Nickels guided the participants in creating a work that celebrated the seasons of Northam.
Avon Community Services supported the project by providing lunch, snacks and refreshments each day and the project was coordinated by the Shire of Northam.
Shire of Northam President Chris Antonio said the project was a fantastic example of how partnerships can create meaningful opportunities for young people, while enhancing public spaces.
“Season Splash is about bringing people together, celebrating creativity and giving our young people the opportunity to leave their mark on Northam in a positive and lasting way,” he said.
“This project not only enhances an important public space, but also encourages community pride, connection and participation.
“We are grateful to Dulux and our project partners for helping make this opportunity possible for our young people and the broader community.”
The project was delivered with the support of Avon Community Services, Dulux Australia and the state government through Regional Arts WA.
Final touches to the artwork on the visitor centre building are expected to be completed by Ms Nickels in the coming weeks.
