MALAGA-based charity Dandelions has received a $20,000 grant from CommBank to support its mission of helping WA school children experiencing hardship to access the essentials they need to thrive.

Run entirely by volunteers, the programs put practical support and a little joy into the hands of WA kids who need it.

Every year, Dandelions helps disadvantaged children across metropolitan and regional Western Australia start the school year with the same opportunities as their classmates.

Through its statewide Back to School campaign, the charity provides backpacks filled with new stationery and school essentials to children whose families are experiencing financial hardship, homelessness or domestic violence.

“The funding will help Dandelions WA continue ensuring children can walk into the classroom on day one feeling prepared, confident and ready to learn,” a spokesperson said.

Last year Dandelions WA supplied school bags to more than 15,000 children and have had even greater requests this year.

They also provide Kindness Kits which contain everyday essentials such as toiletries, socks and comfort items, all packed with care for children and families referred to the charity by schools and support agencies.

People can also drop off donations to help bring smiles, confidence and a sense of belonging to WA children by donating new backpacks, stationery and essential hygiene products.

Donations help children attend school feeling prepared, included and equal and can be dropped off at unit 3, 52 Crocker Drive, Malaga, on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays from 9am-12pm.

Dandelions was just one of 17 organisations in Western Australia set to receive a $20,000 grant, as CommBank injects $340,000 in funding to community organisations across the state.
