TWO young brothers training out of Malaga and Ellenbrook have proven their mettle on the international stage after delivering an outstanding performance at the 10th Youth Compatriots Games in Russia.
Eleven-year-old Amiel and 9-year-old Elrad Safaniev, who honed their combat skills across freestyle wrestling, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, and sports sambo, represented Australia at the international tournament held in Khimki, where Amiel won gold and Elrad won bronze.
Their success in Khimki adds to a growing international record for the pair, who both won gold at the Singapore Open freestyle wrestling in March, where Amiel also claimed the top spot in sports sambo.
Both brothers also previously tested themselves against elite global competition at the World Championships in Abu Dhabi last year, where Amiel placed ninth in a field of approximately 60 competitors.
Their father and coach Marc Safaniev said winning on the mat in Russia carried special weight for the young athletes.
“Winning anything in a sport like wrestling in Russia is special because it’s kind of like the leading nation in that sport,” he said.
“Coming from a nation where we don’t really have a system for it and we’re basically self-trained, to get ourselves in that position does make it special.”
Mr Safaniev coaches both boys alongside trainers Professor William Dias and Master Goioere at Perth Martial Arts Centre in both Malaga and Ellenbrook.
The international trip involved navigating tight visa approvals received just hours before departure, with Mr Safaniev expressing gratitude to sponsors MAS Labour Hire, Studio Combat Wear Sydney and Rossotrudnichestvo for helping provide uniforms and travel support.
Amiel and Elrad have now returned to their regular training schedules as they prepare for upcoming national and international competitions.
