THE annual Gunners’ Day march and service, which has historical ties to Guildford, will be held in Stirling Square on Sunday, November 5.

Organised by the Royal Australian Artillery Association of WA the event honours and commemorates those who have fought with the Artillery from Gallipoli, France, Korea to Vietnam.

In November 1913 the 38th Battery Field Artillery marched into Guildford prior to moving into the newly established depot and artillery headquarters at South Guildford.

The battery was welcomed by the Guildford community and the then governor Major-General Sir Harry Barron spoke of the importance of the unit and the responsibility of the community to look after them.

A year later, these men marched out to war as the 8th Battery 3rd AIF, serving at Gallipoli and on the Western Front.

In 1919 the Regiment laid up their flag at St Matthew’s Church, their Garrison Church.

The people of Guildford and St Matthew’s Church have continued the tradition of support to the artillery men or Gunners from 1913 to present times with a Gunners’ Day service and march.

This originated in 1930 and has continued since then apart from COVID-19 restrictions.

The historic ceremonial occasion welcomes Gunners, their families and visitors to share in the commemoration.
