THE Eastern Metropolitan Regional Council (EMRC) has been awarded the 2024 Local Government - Regional Council winner for waste managemen initiatives at the Waste Authority’s Waste Sorted 2024 Awards gala dinner.
The award recognised EMRC’s commitment to sustainability and its comprehensive strategy to demonstrate circular economy leadership, minimise environmental impact, and create value for the communities it serves.
EMRC audit and recruitment committees member and Swan councillor Aaron Bowman said the award was a testament to EMRC’s dedication to creating a sustainable future for the community through innovative waste management practices.
EMRC chief executive officer Marcus Geisler said the sustainability strategy is not just a plan but a reflection of the organisation’s culture and values.
“The EMRC team is thrilled to be recognised by the community, industry peers and the state government as a leader and innovator in waste management and resource recovery,” he said.
“The surpluses of our activities are reinvested into community-owned circularity infrastructure as well as education and engagement programs.
“This accolade is a fantastic recognition of the hard work and dedication of the entire EMRC team, and we are proud to be acknowledged by the Waste Authority.”
Mr Geisler said the name of the award, Waste Sorted, was a reminder of what can be done by all to help minimise waste generation.
“Sort the waste you generate and first try to reuse, repurpose, repair, or put it in the right bin so it can be recycled into new products,” he said.
“(It’s) a great opportunity to get involved and become part of the solution.”
