THIS week the 41st national AFL masters carnival was played around Fremantle and Perth.

Mundaring resident, 75-year-old Doug Cornish, played in both the over 65s and over 70s sides for Western Australia.

Doug said that even years after his time playing in the WAFL for South Fremantle, he’s still excited to be out on the field and giving it a go.

Doug started playing AFL in 1959 and hopes he won’t need to retire until at least 2030.

“In 1989 I asked our state football physiotherapist, how I could reduce or eliminate my ongoing injuries. He said to give up,” Doug said.

Now 36 years and 33 national carnivals later, Doug said you should know your body, get a second opinion, keep looking after yourself and doing what makes you happy.

He played for South Fremantle from 1968 until 1971, and now plays in half back, half forward or mid fielding positions.

The over 65s WA side defeated Victoria three goals to one last Sunday, and the over 70s team won against the Allies, who are made up of the rest of the Australian states and territories, with five goals to zero.

Doug said the positive spirit and camaraderie has been outstanding and connections between some players for up to 40 years were on display.

Other WA players from the Perth Hills include Stuart Aldred and Garry Ross, who both played in the over 65s team.

The carnival has been played all through the week, with games due to wrap up with finals on Saturday, October 5.
