MISSION Australia is again seeking volunteers for its annual Christmas lunch in the park.

The Christmas lunch, which has been held in Wellington Square for the past 49 years, is the biggest event of its kind in the country and has served more than 71,750 meals since its inception in 1975.

It provides a space where those living rough around Perth can enjoy the festive joy of carols, traditional Christmas food and the company of others on the special day.

The event needs more than 300 volunteers to help the day run smoothly and make sure everyone who goes along can get some good food, entertainment and company.

Glen Forrest resident and annual volunteer Rocky Harding has been volunteering at the Christmas lunch for the past two years and is looking forward to being part of this year’s event.

“I’ve always loved volunteering, to give back to the community,” she said.

“The best part about being part of the Christmas lunch in the park is to see the happy smiling faces of the guests coming in and their cheery greetings of ‘Merry Christmas’.”

She said volunteering has helped her learn life lessons and appreciate everything she has.

“Remember that the happier people are not those getting more but those giving more,” she said.

“At the end of the day it’s not about what we’ve accomplished it’s about who we’ve lifted up, who we’ve made better and what we’ve given back.

“More people should volunteer for this event so as to realise that we are fortunate whilst others have their own reasons for being where they are.”

Mission Australia event manager Carley Smith said everyone deserves to feel the joy of Christmas, no matter their living situation.

“Christmas is a time for celebration, filled with food, festivities and family,” she said.

“However, for many it can also be one of the most isolating and challenging days of the year.”

She said guests would enjoy a three-course meal, as well as festive music and companionship as everyone sat down for Christmas lunch together.

On the day, additional services will be offered for free to lunch guests.

“In addition, our dedicated wellness zone will offer free haircuts, showers, and clothing to those in need, ensuring everyone can feel cared for and valued during this special season,” Ms Smith said.

Every child in attendance will receive a gift from Santa, and each adult will receive a care package which includes personal care items and non-perishable food to help in the days between Christmas and New Year when many services are closed or have reduced hours.

Last year more than 1500 people attended, making it the biggest Christmas lunch in the whole time the event has been running.

Rising attendance numbers laid bare the confronting reality of the housing and cost of living crisis in Perth, and Ms Smith said a similar number of attendees are expected this year.

“With the increase in need in our community, our volunteers are more essential than ever to help make this event possible,” she said.

“If you can’t help on Christmas Day we still need volunteers to help put together our care packs, as well as help set up and pack down the event.”
