MIDLAND Meals have received a commitment of $75,000 to put toward a new vehicle used to transport food for the vulnerable members of the community.

Liberal candidate for Midland Mike Matich said he was committing the amount to support food transport for Midland Meals, ensuring essential meals were delivered.

Midland Meals provides 870 meals a week with the help of 170 volunteers, with some even supplying the food.

Midland Meals founder Loren Pratt currently uses his own personal vehicle for food collection and delivery and says a vehicle for the group would reduce much personal wear and tear.

“You’re usually taking two trips, and I’ve run a Camry into the ground,” Mr Pratt said.

“Whereas in a van, you just put it in and bring it back, because it also would have air conditioning in it, which means that the food stays cold and safe as well.

“I’ve got the vision of making sure that there’s no one out in our community that’s going to be homeless, or if they are homeless, they’re not going to be hungry or lonely or cold at night.

“I could not go to sleep at night knowing that on my watch someone in this city was doing that, and so that’s why I make it well known that we’re there in a sea container behind the police station.

“They come in, we give them sleeping bags, we give them blankets, we give them all the food they want, and one of our values is we set a king’s table.

“I want them to walk away with a little bit of heaven when they haven’t seen heaven, and just a little bit of reality from their unreality.”
