Midland man charged over evade police incident

TWO days after the WA Police Force launched a fleet of 12 new Volkswagen Touareg R hybrid vehicles, they were in action when detectives from the rapid apprehension squad were involved in an alleged evade incident.

The rapid apprehension squad received the high-performance vehicles to undertake specialised duties which frequently include police emergencies and intercept driving.

About 9.10pm on Friday, July 4, detectives sighted a silver Mazda 3 hatchback on Tonkin Highway, near Great Eastern Highway in Rivervale.

It will be alleged the vehicle was stolen from outside a residence in Bayswater between Wednesday, July 2 and Thursday, July 3.

Police activated their emergency lights and sirens, however; it will be alleged the driver failed to stop and an evade ensued, which was soon terminated due to public safety concerns.

Police air wing continued to track the vehicle, as it was allegedly driven recklessly, at excessive speeds and breached red traffic control lights through the suburbs of High Wycombe, Perth Airport, Guildford, Woodbridge and Midland.

Subsequently, it will be alleged the vehicle stopped when it collided with wooden bollards at the intersection of Lloyd Street and Charles Street in Midland, where the driver allegedly fled the scene on foot, before being apprehended by police nearby.

A 28-year-old man from Midland has been charged with stealing a motor vehicle,  reckless driving to escape pursuit by police, driver of a vehicle failed to comply with a direction to stop (circumstance of aggravation), no authority to drive.
