WITH the WA community achievement awards approaching, Trudi Hogg has nominated her father Thomas Hogg for his dedication to Kalamunda and the community.

“You don’t do these things for awards but when you get recognised, it’s very nice,” Mr Hogg said.

Since she could remember, Ms Hogg said her father always lent a helping hand for others.

“Throughout my childhood he was always raising money for something or another through Rotary, Freemasonry or through the small businesses that he owned,” she said.

“I have never known him not to buy a raffle ticket when approached by any community group trying to raise money.

“He has always instilled in me the values to work hard for what you want and to help others along the way, always learning as you go.”

In his Maida Vale home, Mr Hogg created the Romancing the Stone garden.

When he purchased the property in July 2000, he said it was an absolute jungle mess.

But he saw the potential it had and turned it into a garden open to the community.

Various charities have used the garden to help their cause and in the 25 years since the garden opened, $640,000 has been raised.

About four years ago, Mr Hogg offered his garden as a meeting place for people to meet and socialise as part of the City of Kalamunda’s Darling Range seniors hub program.

Mr Hogg is also an active supporter of the Amanda Young Foundation and has raised awareness and funds for meningococcal disease.

“The success of the Amanda Young Foundation and the Darling Range Hub, both of which he has significantly supported, will persist due to the strong foundations he helped establish,” Ms Hogg said.

Mr Hogg said he felt very dear about being nominated for the community award by his youngest daughter.

“She always thinks her dad is so marvellous with what he’s done but I’m very proud of her too,” he said.

“She rings me every night, and God bless her the darling girl, just to check on her 86-year-old dad.”
