EARLY talks about RSL WA’s expiring lease at a site in Bassendean are underway to explore future prospects.

Town of Bassendean chief executive Cameron Woods said 179 Guildford Road was currently leased to RSL’s Eastern Regional Sub Branch under the town’s community leasing framework.

The land is adjoined with the RSL-owned site at 10 Kenny Street.

“The town and the RSL have commenced discussions to determine how we can work together to maximise the value of the site going forward,” Mr Woods said.

“Both the town and RSL WA are committed to working together to find the best use for the land and all options will be explored whilst maintaining the local RSL’s club house on the adjacent site.”

RSL WA chief executive Stephen Barton said he was hopeful an outcome can be found which benefits the veteran community and the residents of Bassendean.

In a media statement dated July 29, Bassendean said the site was an ideal location as it was 100m from the Bassendean train station and 10km from the Perth CBD.

Mr Woods said the site was zoned R100 and could assist the town in meeting its infill target.

According to Bassendean’s scheme and strategy FAQs report, R-codes refer to density.

“The higher the R-code, the greater the number of dwellings in a given area,” the report said.

“For example, R100 provides for greater development intensity than R20.”

According to the WA Planning Commission’s 2018 central sub-regional planning framework, Bassendean’s urban infill housing target is 4150 to meet the town’s projected population of 24,300 in 2050.
