THE City of Swan has awarded a tender for its biggest project to date, which is expected to cost $145 million.

Earlier this month the city said it had awarded the tender for the construction of Swan Active Ellenbrook to ADCO due to the company’s “extensive expertise in delivering large-scale projects, including many for local governments”.

Development plans include a range of sporting and leisure facilities, with the aquatic area to include 50m and 25m pools, warm water pools, small toddler pools, four waterslides, a small grandstand, change rooms, significant shade sails, and barbecue and family areas.

The recreation area will feature a sports hall with indoor multi-purpose courts, a gym and fitness centre, a wellness centre, family facilities, a creche, and a kiosk with kitchen facilities.

In a statement the city said the project was due for completion in 2027.

“In accepting the tender – and to ensure the full project scope could be delivered – the council resolved to increase its financial contribution to $95 million,’’ the statement said.

“The state government increased its grant funding by $8m to an overall contribution of $20m in addition to providing the site for the facility.

“The commonwealth government has contributed $30m and has also brought forward the timing of its grant contribution.’’

West Swan MLA and deputy premier Rita Saffioti said she was proud to see the project move from vision to reality, with the award for tender marking a major milestone.

“The proposed leisure centre will bring much-needed recreational and aquatic facilities to a prime location at the heart of Ellenbrook’s growing transport hub,” she said.

Hasluck MHR  Tania Lawrence said the awarding of the construction tender showed what could be achieved when all three levels of government worked together to deliver for the community.

“It’s exciting to see real progress on one of the largest recreation and aquatic facilities in our region, designed with the community’s needs in mind and set to provide the high-quality space they truly deserve,” she said.

Swan Hills MLA Michelle Maynard said she was pleased to see the city progressing plans for the next stage, furthering the activation of the heart of Ellenbrook.

City of Swan Mayor Tanya Richardson said it was a cause for celebration to see another significant move towards the project’s conclusion.

“With the Ellenbrook area continuing to experience rapid growth, this is exactly the sort of facility needed to boost social inclusion, cohesion and community wellbeing,” she said.

“We couldn’t have done this without the tremendous support we have received from the state and  commonwealth governments.

“The additional financial assistance, along with the city’s commitment, has ensured the community’s needs will be fully met.”

The city said the project build time was about 108 weeks and further project updates would be provided during this time.
