SHIRE of Mundaring will review its cat laws in light of the state government’s decision to review the Cat Act 2011 to give local governments the power to introduce cat containment rules through local laws.

The change means the shire will be able to look at stronger measures to keep cats safe at home and reduce the impact on our native birds, reptiles and small mammals.

Shire President Paige McNeil said the announcement was welcome news for residents who have been asking for action for many years.

“People in our community care deeply about protecting local wildlife. We also know they want clear, fair rules that help cats live safely at home,” President Paige said.

“It is encouraging to see this reform receive bipartisan support in Parliament. This review means we can move forward with updating our keeping of cats local law to reflect community expectations. It’s about balancing the love we have for our pets with the need to safeguard our environment.

“I thank the state government for listening and acknowledge WALGA for championing this issue on behalf of local governments across WA.”

Shire of Mundaring’s Council Plan 2024-2034 highlights responsible animal ownership as a key priority in building a safe and healthy community.

Reviewing the keeping of cats local law will deliver on this commitment while supporting biodiversity and pet welfare.

Residents will be invited to have their say during the consultation process.
