BASSENDEAN artist Andrew Grero has become the key focus of a renewed partnership between the Perth Wildcats and MSWA.

The collaboration, aimed at raising awareness for Western Australians with neurological conditions, began with the Open Air Game played on Thursday at RAC Arena.

Mr Grero, an MSWA client living with young onset Parkinson’s disease, said he was a devoted member of the Wildcats’ fanbase known as the Red Army.

He said his history with the sport went back to his childhood, watching legends like Ricky Grace and James Crawford play.

“Some of my first memories are sitting down with my family around the living room TV, watching the Wildcats play in the 1990 finals” he said.

“I can’t wait to create the same memories with my son as he grows up.”

His artistic talent had previously connected him directly to the team when he was commissioned to create artwork for the Wildcats’ 40th Anniversary Ball.

His dedication to the Wildcats has become more meaningful since his diagnosis, as the club’s consistent, fighting spirit on the court mirrors the daily resilience he now needs.

The Open Air Game gave Mr Grero a platform to transform his sporting passion into support for MSWA.
He launched a dedicated campaign surrounding the game, designing and selling limited-edition merchandise, including t-shirts and hoodies, with all proceeds donated directly to MSWA.

Wildcats owner Mark Arena said the team was excited to highlight an important cause during their games.
“The Open Air Game is one of the highlights of the season,” he said.

“Having MSWA at the centre gives the night an even greater purpose.

“We deeply value the incredible work MSWA does to support West Australians living with neurological conditions.

“Stories like Andrew’s remind us that this game is about more than basketball - it’s about celebrating resilience, creativity, and community, and honoring those who carry the Red Army spirit through their lives.”
