A busy year ahead for tortoise friends

Set to celebrate their 20th anniversary this year, Friends of the Western Swamp Tortoise is calling on those keen to help to get involved.
March 7, 2024

FRIENDS of the Western Swamp Tortoise has formed a youth team, whose first official meeting will be on Sunday, March 24.

Chair Jan Bant said the young members – aged between eight and 16-years-old – were keen to encourage the participation of other youngsters and were devising some innovative methods to attract new volunteers.

The group has many activities planned for 2024, including a celebration of World Turtle Day on Thursday, May 23 and their own 20th anniversary in July.

“We have already assisted a very stretched team from the Department of Biodiversity, Conservation and Attractions (DBCA), who have been so busy fighting fires this summer, they have needed a hand with some reserve maintenance,’’ she said.

“Although it was extremely hot, we managed to temporarily fix a leaning section of the feral proof fence – slated for replacement later in the year – and pick up the litter along a stretch of the Great Northern Highway (getting a head start on Clean Up Australia Day).

“We have booked in some talks to adult groups and are looking forward to giving our exciting free presentations to lots of local schools during the year.’’
