ASHFIELD Sports Club will host its second annual Pride Round this weekend, bringing together soccer, community and a celebration of the LGBTQIA+ community.

The event will include several matches throughout the day, along with a range of family-friendly activities.

Ashfield Sports Club president Phil Kelly said the idea for the event came from the players themselves.

“We’ve got a number of LGBTQIA+ players in our women’s setup and they approached me last year wanting to do a Pride recognition round,” he said.

“It was something we had been working towards for a while, so we were happy to get it rolling.”

Mr Kelly said last year’s inaugural Pride Round exceeded the club’s expectations.

“Last year we had quite a significant crowd turn up for the metro women’s game. There was about 150 to 200 people there, which was amazing,” he said.

“It was a great success, so now it’s a permanent fixture in our calendar, which we are looking to expand as much as possible.”

The club is expecting this year’s event to be just as popular.

“We’ve got games at 11am, 1pm, 3pm and 5pm, so that’s all of our metro men’s and women’s teams that are playing throughout the day,” Mr Kelly said.

“And because we’ve got the four games throughout the day, we’re expecting a significant number of people to come through.”

Ashfield Sports Club will be playing against Kalamunda City FC, Southern Spirit, East Perth FC and Morley Windmills SC.

Off the field, there will also be a bake sale, raffles and a temporary tattoo station.

Pride Players of the Match will be awarded after each game, with final awards and celebrations in the clubrooms after the last match.

Ashfield Sports Club Pride Round will take place on Sunday, July 19 at Ashfield Arena from 11am to 5pm.
