THE Town of Bassendean has organised a series of community events for the WA Tree Festival running from Saturday April 11 to May 10.
Events include a free movie screening, night fauna walks, tree-theme rhyme and story time workshops as well as subsidised trees for residents.
A community celebration of trees in urban areas and beyond, the tree festival is delivered through local and regional councils including the Town of Bassendean.
Bassendean chief executive officer Cameron Woods said the town had organised several free and low-cost events.
“These include a free outdoor screening of The Lorax on Sunday April 12, interactive fauna night walks at Bindaring Wetland (April 16) and Mary Crescent Reserve (May 10), and tree-themed early-years programming at the Bassendean Library,” Mr Woods said.
“This includes Djeran Trees rhymetime (April 29) and Djeran Trees storytime (April 30).”
Early release plant vouchers will also be available at the Bassendean Markets on April 26.
“General sales for plants to residents and trees to residents vouchers open on April 28 giving residents access to subsidised native, waterwise plants and trees to plant at home.
“Through the plants to residents program residents can purchase up to 20 native plants at just $1 each supporting water-efficient gardens and greener neighbourhoods.
“The newer trees to residents program allows residents to purchase up to five trees per property at $5 per tree, helping grow local canopy cover.”
He said trees provided a range of benefits, including cooling our homes, streets and the environment and providing shade and habitat.
“They also help to clean the air and improve mental and physical health, including reducing heat-related illnesses during heat waves,” Mr Woods said.
“Streets with trees also increase the amenity and economic value of our homes, streets, and reserves, as homes on tree-lined streets are worth an average of $16,000 more than homes on streets without trees.”
